"Watch. Listen. React" - the new Open Door Association's campaign draws attention to the problem of aggression towards people with intellectual disabilities. We decided to communicate to youngsters – generally more compassionate and sensitive to injustice.

Strategy

There are 500 000 mentally disabled people in Poland. Studies show that such people are victims of violence more than 5 times than the rest of the society. 92 % of disabled people were abused at least once. Vast majority of violence is perpetrated by their relatives or carers. Many victims are unable to defend themselves because they are either too weak and dependent on the perpetrators or nobody would believe them. Moreover, the social welfare system in Poland is too weak to prevent it.W Polsce żyje prawie pół miliona osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Natomiast system pomocy społecznej w Polsce jest zbyt słaby, by temu przeciwdziałać. Celem filmu było przybliżenie społeczeństwu problemu agresji oraz uświadomienie konieczności reagowania, kiedy jesteśmy świadkami takich zachowań.

Creation

The idea of the video refers to the symbolism of three wise monkeys and the Japanese adage "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil", modernized by the use of emojis. The black and white film tells a story of a boy with Down syndrome, who is harassed by a caretaker in the mall. Numerous witnesses pass by, but not a single one reacts. They turn their heads away and hide behind their phones. That is why their behavior is stigmatized by the monkey emoji covering their faces. The campaign creators want to draw attention to indifference to aggression towards people with disabilities and portray their silent suffering. They caution that negligence is a symptom of contemporary immaturity.
